Is The Christian Taliban Now Tainting Sports?

New Mexico State star running back Muammar Ali was tagged by Sports Illustrated to be an up and comer. And why not? After all he led his team with 561 rushing yards last year. But as The Progressive Magazine reports, he won't get that chance because he and two other Muslim players were unceremoniously removed from the team.
On October 9, he “received a message on his phone answering machine at his home that his jersey was being pulled and that he was released,” says a letter from his attorney, George Bach, of the ACLU of New Mexico, to the university. That letter, dated October 25, alleges that Head Coach Hal Mumme engaged in religious discrimination. “Coach Mumme questioned Mr. Ali repeatedly about Islam and specifically, its ties to Al-Qaeda,” the letter states. This made Mr. Ali uncomfortable, it says. And then, after the team’s first game, “despite being the star tailback for several years, Mr. Ali was relegated to fifth string and not even permitted to travel with the team,” the letter says.
There are also other allegations against the coach. Apparently he also required his players to recite the Lord's Prayer after each practice and before every game. When Muammar and the two other Muslim players on the team prayed "in a manner different than the others", he was called into the coach's office where he was questioned about Al-Qaeda. When are people going to learn that you can be Muslim and not be connected in any way to a terrorist network? This is the same attitude that was present in Britain for so many years when they tied every Catholic with the IRA. That wasn't true then and this isn't true now. What it is, is another case of scapegoating. This time by an intolerant person who had the power to push his personal religious views on members of his football team. MORE.....

Abramoff Investigation Like Peeling An Onion

The more that is peeled of this onion known as Abramoff, the more the levels of corruption in the Republican Party are found. Reuters is reporting
The U.S. Justice Department's probe of Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff is broader than previously thought, examining his dealings with four lawmakers, former and current congressional aides and two former Bush administration officials, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. Prosecutors in the department's public integrity and fraud divisions are looking into Abramoff's dealings with four Republicans -- former House of Representatives Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas, Rep. Bob Ney of Ohio, Rep. John Doolittle of California and Sen. Conrad Burns of Montana, the paper said, citing several people close to the investigation.
Not only are these members of Congress being investigated, but also
at least 17 current and former congressional aides, about half of whom later took lobbying jobs with Abramoff, as well as an official from the Interior Department and another from the government's procurement office, the Journal said.
Of course DeLay claims it is all a political witch hunt by a rouge Democratic prosecutor, and Ney claims it is all just a misunderstanding, and he's just a victim and a dupe of the workings of Abramoff and Scanlon (who plead guilty to conspiracy charges and is cooperating with prosecutors). The dubious web of deceit and corruption the Republicans have constructed to line their own pockets at the expense of the American people, is becoming unraveled, and none too soon. If there is any justice in the world, the '06 election cycle will allow the Democrats to finally rest control of at least one, and possibly both houses of Congress.

    DeLay And The Lobbyists

Via "The Rant" at Capitol Hill Blue, we are given the lowdown from lobbyists themselves as to the way Tom DeLay (R-TX) conducted business a Majority Leader.
those who know DeLay best say the charges are only part of many laws the Congressman has broken in his climb to the top of the collections of scoundrels, crooks and con artists in Washington. “Everyone knew Tom DeLay was on the take from the day he arrived after the 1984 elections,” says Arnie Wilson, who lobbied Congress for the oil industry from 1974 through 1990. “He had his hand out the day he walked into his office.” Elizabeth Hastings, who lobbied for health care from 1981 through 1992, remembers asking DeLay for support on an insurance bill in 1986. “He gave me a laundry list of what he wanted for his vote,” Hastings says. “It included, of course, maximum contributions to his PAC plus a contribution to some obscure fund in Texas and an invitation to speak at our conference that year in Hawaii. He wanted us to fund the trip for himself, his family, and extend the stay for two weeks after our conference ended. I couldn’t afford that kind of commitment and he voted against the bill.” ------ Matt Stone lobbied Congress for more than 30 years, retiring in 1995. DeLay, he says, kept a record of how much he and other lobbyists ponied up on political contributions, free trips and gifts and pulled it out during meetings. “He’d pull that list out and say ‘Matt, you’re a little light this year’ and then talk about places his family would like to visit,” Stone says. “Next thing you know, we’re sponsoring Rep. DeLay and his family on a trip to Europe.”
Happy Thanksgiving Tommy, you have been voted this year's "Turkey of the Year". Read on.....

Mean Jean Plays The Victim Card

Jean Schmidt (R-OH) now apparently feels quite put upon and is playing the role of victim. As theWahington Post reports:
Judging by her words yesterday -- the first after avoiding the public for three days -- Schmidt doesn't understand what the fuss is about, and sees herself more as victim than villain. "I am amazed at what a national story this has become," she said in a statement. "I have been attacked very personally, continuously since Friday evening."
Well isn't that just too damn bad. I don't see how she can expect people to believe this was a remark made due to the naivety of a freshmean politician, when she used the same smear tactic in her campaign against Paul Hackett. Add to that the fact the person she says sent the message, denies that type of conversation ever took place.
(Col.) Bubp, a GOP state legislator and Marine Corps Reserve officer, had campaigned for Schmidt. He put out his own statement yesterday: "The comments and concerns I shared with Congresswoman Schmidt were never meant as a personal reference to Mr. Murtha. . . . We never discussed anyone by name and there was no intent to ever disparage the congressman or his distinguished record of service for our nation."
Sorry Jean, this grab at "victimhood" just doesn't cut it. Not only have her words been condemned Nationally, but even her own supporters in her Cincinnati district are backing away from her. Hopefully the constituency of her district will remember her actions when she comes up for reelection.

    Mean Jean Schmidt Lied

I seem to recall in my many years that usually a liar is also a coward. So telephone for Jean ---- it's the pot calling. It seems the Col. Bubp that Rep. Schmidt (R-OH) was passing on a message from when she labelled John Murtha a coward on his behalf, said nothing of the kind.
Danny Bubp, a freshman state representative who is a colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve, told The Enquirer [from Cincinnati], that he never mentioned Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., by name when talking with Schmidt, and he would never call a fellow Marine a coward. ------ Bubp, who has served in the Marine Corps Reserve for 27 years, including three years of active duty, said he called Schmidt on Friday afternoon to discuss the resolution that called for the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq - not to talk about Murtha. ------ "The unfortunate thing about all of that is that her choice of words on the floor of the House - I don't know, she's a freshman, she had one minute.
Oh well she's a freshman so that makes everything ok in RepubWorld. It seems to me her words reflect the entire thought process of the Republican representatives at all levels, and they my friends, are NOT freshmen. This is standard operating procedure for them taught so well by Bush/Cheney/Rove. If you dare to question anything regarding Bush's war, you are labelled "unpatriotic" or as in this case a "coward". So let's get one thing straight right now. You Mean Jean are the coward and a liar. While I am at it, Let's get this straight also. What was voted on demanding the IMMEDIATE withdrawal from Iraq was NOT what Murtha said at all. What he DID offer was a resolution that would force the president to withdraw the nearly 160,000 troops in Iraq "at the earliest practicable date." It would establish a quick-reaction force and a nearby presence of Marines in the region. It also said the U.S. must pursue stability in Iraq through diplomacy. Now that sure doesn't sound like IMMEDIATE to me. How about you?

Op-Ed Rips Woodward For His Silence

I came across this op-ed, while reading one of my favorite blogs, No Quarter. The op-ed is from The Tampa Tribune. Here are some excerpts
Woodward Failed His Readers By Holding Back What He Knew Published: Nov 21, 2005 Bob Woodward is one of the most admired reporters in the world, so it was particularly disappointing to learn that for two years he withheld important information about the CIA leak investigation that led to the indictment of Vice President Cheney's top aide, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. ------ The best-selling author, whose reporting for The Washington Post during the Watergate scandal three decades ago helped bring down a president and inspired countless young people to become journalists, let down his colleagues, editors and readers. ------ Once again the nation has seen a star reporter run amok. Once again, the nation has seen how Beltway reporters operate under different standards from those at community newspapers. And once again, the nation has watched a good newspaper gamble its credibility on a franchise player.
If Woodward thinks for one minute that he rehabilitated his image with his appearance last night on the Larry King Live show, he should be sadly mistaken. If anything, he came across as a sanctimonious demi-god. His credibility is in the tank exactly where it belongs. He may have performed a service to his readers and the U.S. during the Watergate scandal, now he is only an aging self-centered jerk. Instead of thinking about the security of his country, instead of thinking about right and wrong and going willingly to Fitzgerald over two years ago with what he knew, he chose to sit on the information in the interest of writing a book (at least that is what he would have us believe - I don't). His first reason for doing this was "fear of being subpoenaed" by Patrick Fitzgerald. Now in his own words, he states it was "what can I aggressively push to get in the newspaper or a book". What a friggin' crock. The whole episode involving Woodward has a definite "can't pass the smell" taint to it. His cozy relationship and much to easy access to the Bush administration, combined with his historical ties to military intelligence (as pointed out at Watergate.com) , one can only wonder what his real role in this entire matter is.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy His Courage And Honour Live On

    29 May 1917 - 22 November 1963
There are no words that can express, for a man this nation has laid to rest. He was our country's real great chief, and now for him, there are tears and grief. He loved his country and his people, and showed it by praying beneath the church steeple. He had faith, courage, strength and love for his countrymen and for GOD above. He had his sorrows like all of us, but lead on us, he knew he must. Now from this world he has been taken, and from that shock we still are shaken. We must go on we knew he'd say, though he has gone from us today, He's in our thoughts and in our memory, as he rests in Arlington National Cemetery. The eternal flame that shines upon him, is a light that never will grow dim; For to many of us there never will be a man like John F. Kennedy
Imagine life as it would be now if tyrants had not gunned down the bastion of courage. Rest In Peace Our Dear Icon of all that was decent and met the ideals of a country that was at that time loved throughout the globe. May your ideals once again return to a once great land.

    I've Spoken And I Can't Get Out!!!

And to think this dumbass is supposed to be the leader of the free world. God help us all! BBC explains poor Georgie's dilemma.
Mr Bush answered a range of questions before one reporter said: "Respectfully, sir - you know we're always respectful - in your statement this morning with President Hu, you seemed a little off your game, you seemed to hurry through your statement. There was a lack of enthusiasm. Was something bothering you?" The president answered: "Have you ever heard of jet lag? Well, good. That answers your question." The reporter asked for a follow-up question but the president then thanked the attending journalists and said "No you may not" as he walked away. He strode from the lectern to the door, trying both handles and then breaking into a laugh. An aide escorted him to the correct exit and on to dinner at the Great Hall of the People.
Thank goodness he didn't have his bicycle nearby...he would have mowed down more than a few reporters I am sure. Check out C&L for the video.

Birds Of A Feather - Deferment Dick To Raise Funds For DeLay

In case anyone had any doubt as to whether the corruption goes to the very top in this White House ..Read On
Vice President Cheney is scheduled to appear at a December 5, Houston fundraiser on DeLay's behalf. Donors are being asked to contribute at least $500, according to an e-mail sent by the Fort Bend (Texas) Republican Party. Shannon Flaherty, DeLay's spokeswoman, confirmed details of the fundraiser. "For five years, Congressman DeLay has served as a key ally to pass the White House's agenda through Congress, and Ronnie Earle's political sideshow isn't going to get in the way of the real business at hand," said Flaherty. "This event shows the Democrat strategy of avenging their ballot box losses with smear tactics and lawsuits is not going to work -- Republicans stick by their friends and don't back down from a fight."
Yup Republicans strick with their friends alright. I wonder how they will like living in a little 6X6 foot cell. Put Dick and Tom in the same cell they make a lovely couple.

    DeLay Aid Pleads Guilty

It looks like Hot Tub Tom better get ready to fall. ABC News tells us that in turn for a guilty plea for conspiracy, Michael Scanlon will cooperate into the investigation of attempts to defraud Indian tribes and corrupt a member of Congress.
The charge was in a criminal information filed Friday accusing Scanlon of conspiring with Abramoff to defraud Indian tribes and engage in a corrupt scheme that lavished trips, sports tickets and campaign donations on a member of Congress, Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio.
I can just about guarantee you there are House members on both sides of the aisle that are getting nervous over this development.
DeLay is among those facing scrutiny for his associations with Abramoff, including a trip to Scotland and use of Abramoff's skybox at a Washington sports arena. Abramoff's lobbying network stretched far into the halls of Congress. Documents obtained by The Associated Press show nearly three dozen lawmakers helping to block an American Indian casino in Louisiana while collecting large donations from the lobbyist and his tribal clients. Among the documents were private e-mails, released by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, in which Abramoff said he had persuaded Ney to attach language to an election reform bill to help an American Indian tribe in Texas reopen a closed casino. Abramoff directed a Texas tribe, the Tiguas, to donate to Ney's re-election campaign and PAC by e-mail. Abramoff and Scanlon were paid more than $80 million between 2001 and 2004 by six American Indian tribes with casinos.
Bloomberg goes into greater detail, saying
His testimony would ratchet up the pressure on Abramoff and aid prosecutors in widening the investigation to members of Congress, such as Republicans DeLay and Representative Robert Ney of Ohio. ----- Beyond the potential legal concerns, Scanlon's cooperation with authorities may spell political jeopardy for Republicans leading into next year's elections, especially if he helps draw other lawmakers into the investigation. "He knows where all the bodies are buried," said a congressional aide who worked with Scanlon.
Regardless of who is found to be involved in this, even if they are Democrats, I hope they are hit and hit damn hard. It's time to clean up the corruption brought to Congress by lobbyists and special interest groups.

    Iraqi Leaders Agree With Murtha

Rep. Murtha was called a "coward" for suggesting to" immediately redeploy U.S. troops consistent with the safety of U.S. forces", and in turn "create a quick reaction force in the region". Well it looks like not only does the American public agree but leaders in Iraq also. Bloomberg.com reports:
Iraqi leaders, meeting at a reconciliation conference in Cairo, urged an end to violence in the country and demanded a timetable for the withdrawal of coalition troops from Iraq.
Listen up all you "chicken hawks" who refuse to see the truth. Even Iraq wants the troops out.

    Rangel Knocks Down Deferment Dick

Wonderful isn't it? So nice to hear such honesty out of Deferment Dick Cheney criticizing Democrats and all others who question the reasons put forward for invading Iraq. Here is what he had to say today
"What is not legitimate and what I will again say is dishonest and reprehensible, is the suggestion by some U.S. senators that the president of the United States or any member of his administration purposely misled the American people on prewar intelligence."
In answer to Deferment Dicks' bull shit, Rep. Charlie Rangel used his Harlem whit
The decorated Korean War veteran took aim at Cheney after the White House put Vietnam War hero Rep. Jack Murtha (D-Pa.) in its cross hairs for recanting his support for the Iraq war and calling for the troops to return home. "Cheney is like a chess player; he likes to move other people's pieces. In this case, it's sending other people's kids to war," Rangel told The Daily News.
I noticed a bit of a drawback in the talking points today also. Previously, they were saying the Senators saw the same intelligence reports as the Administration. Today the meme is "they had ACCESS to THE intelligence". Notice the parsing of words here? Notice the lack of the word SAME and the addition of the word ACCESS? It seems to me they know that they are walking on quick sand, and their own words are coming back to bite them in the ass.

Mean Jean Schmidt Calls Murtah A Coward

The attacks from "chicken hawk" Republicans against Rep. John Murtah (D-PA) over his call for a redeployment of troops continued, this time hitting what has to be an all time low even for them, when Jean "Full Of" Schmidt who recently won election to the House running against Iraqi Vet Paul Hackett in Ohio. During that campaign she had the audacity to challenge and call into question Hackett's courage. Looking in fact like she dressed specifically for her TV debut, she decided to come to the floor of the House and call decorated Vietnam Veteran John Murtah (a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts) a "coward". From the AP
The fiery, emotional debate climaxed when Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, the most junior member of the House, told of a phone call she received from a Marine colonel "He asked me to send Congress a message - stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message - that cowards cut and run, Marines never do," Schmidt said. Democrats booed and shouted her down - causing the House to come to a standstill. Rep. Harold Ford, D-Tenn., charged across the chamber's center aisle screaming that it was an uncalled for personal attack. "You guys are pathetic. Pathetic," yelled Rep. Marty Meehan, D-Mass.
Rep. Meechan was correct this was PATHETIC. Then again Schmidt is looked upon as a certified nut-job by many in her own homestate of Ohio so what can we expect. After criticism from her coleagues on both sides of the aisle for her comments, she was forced to rescind her remarks and have them struck from the record lest she be embarrassed further by House of Representatives Leadership for breaking House rules by impuning the integrity of another Member of Congress.
The Speaker Pro Tempore: The house will be in order. Members pleas take seats. The gentlelady from Ohio. Ms. Schmidt: Mr. Speaker, my remarks were not directed at any member of the House and I did not intend to suggest that they applied to any member. Most especially the distinguished gentleman from Pennsylvania. I therefore ask for unanimous consent that my words be withdrawn. The Speaker Pro Tempore: Without objection. The gentlelady's words will be withdrawn.
Isn't that just typical of the current group of Republicans who when they can't support their actions or policies they trash the messenger and his/her reputation, then rescind the remarks and act as if you never said it at all. Well I have an observation for you Ms. Schmidt, when you can't stand behind your words, THAT is COWARDISM and you lady (and I use that term loosely) are a COWARD.

    Kerry Slams Republican Attack Dogs

Well we knew it was going to happen. The Republicans can't defend their Iraq policy with facts, so they sent out the attack dogs to smear Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) because of his call for a re-deployment of troops. Via Light Up The Darkness blog we read John Kerry's response
“I won’t stand for the ‘swift boating’ of Jack Murtha. It disgusts me that a bunch of guys who have never put on the uniform of their country venomously turn their guns on a Marine who came home from Vietnam with a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. No matter what J.D. Hayworth says, there is no sterner stuff than the backbone and courage that defines Jack Murtha’s character and conscience. “You know why the Republicans are engaged in the lowest form of smear and fear politics? Because they’re afraid of actually debating a senior congressman who has advised presidents of both parties on military matters. They’re afraid to debate a decorated veteran who lives and breathes the concerns of our troops, not the empty slogans of an Administration that sent our brave troops to war without body armor. They’re terrified of actually leveling with the American people about the way they misled America into war, and admitting they have no clear plan to finish the job and get our troops home. Whether you agree with Jack Murtha’s policy or not is irrelevant. The truth is there is a better course for our troops and for America in Iraq, and I am going to keep fighting until we take that course for the good of our country. “Instead of letting his cronies run their mouths, the President for once should stop his allies from doing to Jack Murtha what he set them loose to do to John McCain in South Carolina and Max Cleland in Georgia. The President should finally find the courage to debate the real issue instead of destroying anyone who speaks truth to power as they see it. It’s time for Americans to stand up, fight back, and make it clear it’s unacceptable to do this to any leader of any party anywhere in our country.”
Like him or not, Kerry's words hit the mark. I am sure Murtha can handle the White House and their "swift boat" nattering nutjobs quite well. If they try to attack a veteran with a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts it will blow up in their faces. The atmosphere in the country is not the same now as when they smeared another decorated veteran Max Cleland who lost his right arm and both legs in Vietnam. The people are wise to the gutter politics played by these slime balls and won't stand for it this time.

    Go Fitz Go!!!

What have we heard like a steady drumbeat since it was revealed Woodward did not come forward about what he knew about the CIA leak investigation? Our parrots in the media all repeated the same meme over and over saying everything from Fitzgerald ran a flawed investigation, to Fitzgerald outright lied. Well let's get one thing straight right now all you air swallowers.........what Fitzpatrick said in his news conference the day he announced the indictment of Scooter Dooter, was In fact, Mr. Libby was the first official KNOWN to have told a reporter when he talked to Judith Miller in June of 2003 about Valerie Wilson. Get the damn quote right before you do your reporting over and over. And a note to all you apologists for the corrupt bunch of thugs in the White House, specifically those endorsing this quote from the blog Wizbang
This has to be an embarrassment for Fitzgerald. It really makes him look like a bumbling Inspector Clouseau. Personally I'll be shocked if they ever charge anyone with the actual leak. Especially if Fitzgerald keeps getting blind-sided with things like this.
Here is a news flash for you from Reuters
Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said in court filings that the ongoing CIA leak investigation will involve proceedings before a new grand jury, a possible sign he could seek new charges in the case. In filings obtained by Reuters on Friday, Fitzgerald said "the investigation is continuing" and that "the investigation will involve proceedings before a different grand jury than the grand jury which returned the indictment" against Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby.
So don't crow too loudly fellas. King George and the rest of his criminal sycophants may just get their comeuppance yet. You see that's the difference between the way Fitzgerald investigates. In contrast to the favored ways of George and the boys he doesn't pull out fingernails or attach electrodes to private parts. This man sticks to the rule of law. Something the current occupants of the White House have ignored daily since they were selected to office.

Scottie And His Boss Are "Baffled"

The White House has responded through their official mouthpiece Scottie McClellan to Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) calling for the immediate withdrawal of troops in Iraq:
Congressman Murtha is a respected veteran and politician who has a record of supporting a strong America. So it is baffling that he is endorsing the policy positions of Michael Moore and the extreme liberal wing of the Democratic party. The eve of an historic democratic election in Iraq is not the time to surrender to the terrorists. After seeing his statement, we remain baffled -- nowhere does he explain how retreating from Iraq makes America safer.
Earth to Scottie.....First of all America was never in danger from Iraq. Do you remember that guy named Osama? Whatever happened to him? Oh yes I forgot George told us he just doesn't give him much thought anymore. Now that REALLY made America safer. As for John Murtha, a decorated veteran, if you cared enough to listen, he says quite clearly
"My plan calls: To immediately redeploy U.S. troops consistent with the safety of U.S. forces. To create a quick reaction force in the region. To create an over-the-horizon presence of Marines. To diplomatically pursue security and stability in Iraq.
Now what part of this didn't you here before you shot off your mouth? Your response sounds an awful lot like desperation.

Senior Democratic Hawk Calls For Withdrawal From Iraq

He is a decorated Vietnam Veteran, a conservative Democrat, and highly respected on both sides of the aisle in Congress. He has been a member of congress for over 30 years, and is the highest ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations defense subcommittee. Representative John Murtha (D-PA) has called for the removal of the troops from Iraq. Below is an excerpt from his speech today:
"The war in Iraq is not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy wrapped in illusion. The American public is way ahead of us. The United States and coalition troops have done all they can in Iraq, but it is time for a change in direction. Our military is suffering. The future of our country is at risk. We cannot continue on the present course. It is evident that continued military action is not in the best interests of the United States of America, the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf Region. ------ "This war needs to be personalized. As I said before, I have visited with the severely wounded of this war. They are suffering. "Because we in Congress are charged with sending our sons and daughters into battle, it is our responsibility, our obligation, to speak out for them. That's why I am speaking out. "Our military has done everything that has been asked of them, the U.S. can not accomplish anything further in Iraq militarily. It is time to bring them home."
Now let's hear Cheney or ANYONE question this man's patriotism just because he spoke out and disagreed with King George's war. The administrations game of modern day McCarthyism that questions everyones' patriotism who dares to disagree with them will not fly this time around. As the AP reports,
Seldom overtly political, Murtha uncharacteristically responded to Vice President Dick Cheney's comments this week that Democrats were spouting "one of the most dishonest and reprehensible charges" about the Bush administration's use of intelligence before the war. "I like guys who've never been there that criticize us who've been there. I like that. I like guys who got five deferments and never been there and send people to war, and then don't like to hear suggestions about what needs to be done," Murtha said. Referring to Bush, Murtha added, "I resent the fact, on Veterans Day, he criticized Democrats for criticizing them."
How refreshing to finally hear a top Democrat in the House calling a spade - a spade. For the entire time of the war it has been neocons like Bush and Cheney and talking heads like the Oxycontin man Rush Limbaugh who got a medical deferment from Vietnam because he had a boil (pylonidal cyst) on his ass who never so much as set foot within a mile of combat that have pushed this war down everyone's throat. Or the likes of Michelle Malkin degrading the reputation of a mother (Cindy Sheehan) who lost a son. I am sick and damn well tired of these far right wannabees and IMO Congressman Murtha did the United States, and the entire world for that matter, a huge favor by doing the right thing and speaking up. His entire speech is available HERE, and you can view it at Crooks and Liars.

What's The Definition Of Obstucting Justice?

Regarding the Woodward/Plame leak story, the Associated Press reports:
On Wednesday, Woodward apologized for not telling his boss, Washington Post's executive editor Leonard Downie Jr., about his being among the journalists who were told about Plame's identity, even as the investigation morphed into a national scandal. Woodward held back the information because he wanted to protect his sources and because he was worried about being subpoenaed in the inquiry, according to the newspaper's Web site. "I hunkered down. I'm in the habit of keeping secrets," Woodward said. "I didn't want anything out there that was going to get me subpoenaed."
It's nice to know that Bob puts his own security above that of the nation. This prima donna needs to be shown the inside of a 6x6 foot cell so he can realize that he is not special and above the law.

    Woodward Needs To Go

Either Bob Woodward is and outright lying idiot, or so ethically challenged he should be fired immediately from WaPo. We have long known him to be a water carrier for the Bush regime (too many private meetings with little Georgie IMO), but now we find out he was a major player in the Plame leak case as well. This, as he dismissed Fitzgerald and his investigation as nothing more than "inside the beltway gossip". Telling Chris Matthews on Hardball discussing the jailing of Judy Miller:
MATTHEWS: Because she won`t tell her who her source is in the leak case. WOODWARD: Yes. MATTHEWS: In the leak case involving Joe Wilson and that trip to Niger. WOODWARD: And that case, when I think it is all told, there is going to be nothing to it. And it is a shame. And the special prosecutor in that case, his behavior, in my view, has been disgraceful.
And what comes to light now from the Washington Post?
Washington Post Assistant Managing Editor Bob Woodward testified under oath Monday in the CIA leak case that a senior administration official told him about CIA operative Valerie Plame and her position at the agency nearly a month before her identity was disclosed. In a more than two-hour deposition, Woodward told Special Counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald that the official casually told him in mid-June 2003 that Plame worked as a CIA analyst on weapons of mass destruction, and that he did not believe the information to be classified or sensitive, according to a statement Woodward released yesterday.
It seems to me Woodward has a lot of explaining to do in light of his hypocritical statements about Fitzgerald, not bothering even to inform his own Managing Editor Leonard Downie until a month ago, and the fact he was involved in the entire matter from the very beginning. The only reason the story is out now is that a senior official of the administration told Fitzgerald of Woodward's involvement. The NY Times got rid of Judy Miller (at a heavy cost in both money and reputation) and The Washington Post should do the same with Woodward. If nothing else, this matter should put the entire media under close scrutiny. There is just to much buddy buddy stuff that is going on between them and the administration. It's no wonder how that bunch in the WH can be as corrupt as they are and there is no reporting on it. The media needs to get out of the Administration's bed and do their job.

Dems Release A Plan For Iraq

In case you didn't notice, all we heard all weekend was how "tough" Georgie was towards his detractors of the Iraq war (read Iraq Occupation for oil). And of course the MSM went right along with this garbage. No one bothered to mention the fact that not only did he outright desecrate the true meaning of Veterans Day, but dear leader also didn't offer up any other plan than his usual "stay the course" crap. In answer to that and the charge that the Democrats have no plan, Senate Democratic Leader (soon to be Majority Leader) Harry Reid delivered the following remarks at a press conference today with Assistant Democratic Leader Dick Durbin and Senator Carl Levin.
"Our troops deserve a strategy in Iraq that is worthy of their sacrifice. That is why, for three years, Democrats have pushed the White House to lay out a plan for success. "Unfortunately, the President has rejected our call, and instead, insisted America needs to "stay the course." With more than 2,050 Americans killed" more than $250 billion spent -- and no end in sight after three years of war -- "staying the course is no longer an option." "Together, we can do better. Democrats have developed a very clear path forward. There are three areas we believe need to be addressed: First, 2006 should be a significant year of transition to full Iraqi sovereignty, with Iraqis taking more and more responsibility for their own security. It's time to take the training wheels off the Iraqi government. Iraqis must begin to run their own country. In 2006, the US and our allies must do everything we can to make that possible. Second, the Administration must advise the Iraqi people that U.S. military forces will not stay indefinitely in Iraq, and that it is their responsibility to achieve the broad-based and sustainable political environment essential for defeating the insurgency. Third, the President needs to submit - on a quarterly basis - a plan for success to Congress and the American people. This plan must specify the challenges and progress being made in Iraq, timetables for achieving our goals and estimated dates for redeployment from Iraq as these goals are met. "Apparently, Republicans have agreed this is the approach we need to take, as they have essentially accepted our amendment. "It cannot be understated that by accepting our amendment, both the Republican leader and the chairman of the Armed Services committee agree that the administration needs to come forward and explain to Congress and the American people its strategy for success and completing the mission. "It's not easy for the President to admit mistakes. It's a lot easier for him to lash out at those who question his policies, but political attacks are not going to get the job done. Our troops have done their job. It's time for the President and this Republican-controlled Congress to do theirs."

    Disgusting Graham Legislation Passes

Given that there has been so much injustice done by labelling someone a terrorist, be it because of the colour of their skin, their language, or their country of origin how in the world could this legislation become law? Via The New York Times
The Senate voted Thursday to strip captured "enemy combatants" at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, of the principal legal tool given to them last year by the Supreme Court when it allowed them to challenge their detentions in United States courts. The vote, 49 to 42, on an amendment to a military budget bill by Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, comes at a time of intense debate over the government's treatment of prisoners in American custody worldwide, and just days after the Senate passed a measure by Senator John McCain banning abusive treatment of them. If approved in its current form by both the Senate and the House, which has not yet considered the measure but where passage is considered likely, the law would nullify a June 2004 Supreme Court opinion that detainees at Guantanamo Bay had a right to challenge their detentions in court. Nearly 200 of roughly 500 detainees there have already filed habeas corpus motions, which are making their way up through the federal court system. As written, the amendment would void any suits pending at the time the law was passed.
This is a tragedy, and a severe backhand to the face of Lady Liberty and all the Constitution of the United States stands for. And the second tragedy from this? 5 DEMOCRATS joined with the ethically challenged Republican party to pass this piece of crap! The turncoats from the Democratic party who voted in favor of this were: Conrad (D-ND) Landrieu (D-LA) Lieberman (D-CT) Nelson (D-NE) Wyden (D-OR) Remember these names fellow progressives and demand they be taken to task by the Dem leadership for their callous disregard of everything the US stands for. If these detainees at Guantanamo whom King George loves to call "evil-doers" cannot challenge their detention in a court of law then what the hell is the meaning of democracy? What Senator Graham and the others who voted for this legislation seem to have conveniently forgotten is that the the Habeas Corpus writ was installed in the constitution as a safeguard against illegal imprisonment and wrongful refusals to issue the writ were one of the grievances before the American Revolution. Article 1 Section 9 of the Constitution of the United States provides that “The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it”. Are these 49 Senators trying to say that the so-called "war on terror" constitutes a rebellion or invasion? The only invasion visible to anyone who cares to look, was done under order from King George, on a country that posed the U.S. no direct threat.

Republican Memo Says Terror Attack Would Validate Bush

What a sad and disgusting state of affairs, that on this, a day for remembering those brave young men and women who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom, we see a story like this. From Capitol Hill Blue:
A confidential memo circulating among senior Republican leaders suggests that a new attack by terrorists on U.S. soil could reverse the sagging fortunes of President George W. Bush as well as the GOP and "restore his image as a leader of the American people." The closely-guarded memo lays out a list of scenarios to bring the Republican party back from the political brink, including a devastating attack by terrorists that could “validate” the President’s war on terror and allow Bush to “unite the country” in a “time of national shock and sorrow.” The memo says such a reversal in the President's fortunes could keep the party from losing control of Congress in the 2006 midterm elections.
What the hell is going on here? They worry about the fortunes of the Republican party and George Bush rather than concern themselves with the citizens of the United States? These no good evil bastards deserve not only to be sent packing from their elected offices, but outright arrested. This is the same damn bunch who accuses everyone of being traitors and al Qaieda sympathizers if they dare to question their policies and the invasion of Iraq. The same people who manipulated intelligence and used it to lie the country into war. These are the same neo-con war mongers who support the likes of Rove, Libby, Hadley, Dick Cheney who possibly compromised (or were involved in the compromising) of a CIA officer's cover because her husband dared to speak out and call a lie a lie. These people are madmen!!! And they have to nerve to label others as "traitor"? It kind of makes you kind of wonder just how much involvement (either implicit or explicit) they had in 911. Go ahead and accuse me of tinfoil hattery, but read this article about PNAC (The Project for the New American Century), then come back and tell me that. You should also take a look at "REBUILDING AMERICA'S DEFENSES", which was published by the Project for the New American Century (PNAC), the author describes as a blueprint for many of the present actions of the Bush administration, actions which have begun to destabilize the balance of power between the nations of the world. Here is a chilling excerpt:
Determined to have their world empire, they offered an eerie prophecy on page 52 of that document about how it might be accomplished, "Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor." Their dream of a catalyzing event could not have been better actualized than in the events of 9/11.
Better still, do even more research about it and decide for yourself. Then combine it with not only the above story, but also remember all the so-called "terror alerts" leading up to the last election whenever King Georges' approval rating dropped. The story of this memo should be on the front page of every newspaper in the world not just the country and the lead story on every newscast. Not only will it then make the populace aware of the criminal manipulations of George and his henchmen, but perhaps with it out in the open, our own level of protection will increase. Read the entire Capitol Hill Blue article HERE.....

God Heard What You Did - And Boy Is She Pissed

In elections that were held last Tuesday, the citizens of Dover not only said no to the teaching of "Intelligent Design", they tossed every member of the school board who supported this nonsense back into the looney room they escaped from. This didn't sit too well with Pat Robertson, who took time out from threatening elected leaders like Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez with death, to warn the people of Dover that God might forsake the town because of the vote. PFAW alerts us to the latest nonsense coming from this nutjob of the religious right:
“I’d like to say to the good citizens of Dover. If there is a disaster in your area, don’t turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city. And don’t wonder why He hasn’t helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I’m not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that’s the case, don’t ask for His help because he might not be there.”
Just when you thought he might get some sense after the reaction to his Chavez threats, he comes back and reminds us what a raving lunatic he is. I'm sure the residents of Dover send their thanks for the heads-up oh holy one! Click HERE for the video.

Go Ahead And Torture, Just Don't Tell Us

Bill Frist has got to have the most disjointed reasoning on the matter of the secret CIA prisons that I have heard to date. From CNN
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist says he is more concerned about the leak of information regarding secret CIA detention centers than activity in the prisons themselves. Frist told reporters Thursday that while he believed illegal activity should not take place at detention centers, he believes the leak itself poses a greater threat to national security and is "not concerned about what goes on" behind the prison walls. "My concern is with leaks of information that jeopardize your safety and security -- period," Frist said. "That is a legitimate concern."
Regarding any conern about what was happening to the prisoners, he replied:
"I am not concerned about what goes on and I'm not going to comment about the nature of that," Frist replied.
Ok so I guess it's alright to torture and abuse prisoners, deny them access to legal counsel, and hide the whole mess in some foreign prison. And this horses' ass wants to be President? I appologize to any horses I may have offended in the above statement. I am sure YOUR ass makes more sense.

Don't Let The Back Door Hit Ya.....

where the good lord split ya.....AP reports:
Judith Miller, the New York Times reporter who was first lionized, then vilified by her own newspaper for her role in the CIA leak case, retired from the Times on Wednesday, declaring that she had to leave because she had "become the news."
Sure Judy I believe that..NOT. It's obvious to anyone with half a brain that the NYT was more than willing to get rid of this millstone that was around their neck. Expect to see Judy on every TV appearance her agent can get her on so she can play the martyr role to the hilt, and claim she is lobbying for a federal shield law for reporters. That's well and good Judy but what you were involved in would not have been covered by any "shield" regarding sources. You were not protecting a source, you were protecting yourself and the individual(s) who did the deed not a whistleblower. As usual, her ego takes precedent over good reporting. That's more than obvious if you read the current article in The Washington Post. Here are a few excerpts:
"I am so powerful and influential that I take over Army divisions? I run the New York Times newsroom single-handedly? And now I take the country to war? Wow! That must be one heck of a reporter. I've heard of pushy broads, but this brings the pushy broad to a new level." ------- For instance, Miller was promoted in the late 1980s to an editing job as deputy Washington bureau chief. And it was a disaster. She ran roughshod over staff so harshly that Max Frankel, then the paper's executive editor, said he "relieved her of that job." "She was very anxiety-ridden and tough on a lot of people," he says.
That's probably why most other reporters at the NYT looked of "questionable behaviour", and "getting too close to her sources". Now that's an understatement to say the least. Take this excerpt from the article as an example:
Adam Clymer, retired political correspondent for the Times, recalls an episode during the 1988 presidential campaign, when Miller was deputy Washington bureau chief. Then the political editor based in New York, Clymer was awakened just after midnight one morning by a call from Miller, he says. She was demanding that a story about Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis be pulled from the paper. The story was too soft, she complained -- and said Lee Atwater, the political strategist for Vice President George H.W. Bush, believed it was soft as well. Clymer said he was stunned to realize that Atwater apparently had either seen the story or been told about it before publication. He and Miller argued, he recalls, and he ultimately hung up on her, twice. To Clymer, it was an indication of what he and others believe is Miller's main problem. "She had gotten too close to her sources," he says.
Read the entire WaPo article, it gives quite an insight into not only her but her "lightening-rod" persona.

    Congressional Republicans Silence Vet's Voices

House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Steve Buyer (R-IN) announced that for the first time in at least 55 years, “veterans service organizations will no longer have the opportunity to present testimony before a joint hearing of the House and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committees.” This is an outrageous act on the part of the House GOP leadership. I suppose we should not be surprised though, seeing as they are only good at mouthing the words "support our troops". When it comes to giving them the tools they need such as body armour and fully armoured tanks they are nowhere to be found. The only time they WERE there for them was to send them into an unjust invasion and occupation of another country, and when they decided NOT to pay for medical treatment and NOT to increase or even continue their existing benefits, and in fact actually cut them. A note to those "patriots" everywhere....supporting the troops is more than a bumper sticker or a flag lapel pin. More at Think Progress

    "Enemies List" Kept By Bush

Reminiscent of the Nixon era, the White House keeps its' own "Enemies List" of individuals it feels undermine or speak up against them and their policies. Capitol Hill Blue reports:
Spurred by paranoia and aided by the USA Patriot Act, the Bush Administration has compiled dossiers on more than 10,000 Americans it considers political enemies and uses those files to wage war on those who disagree with its policies. The “enemies list” dates back to Bush’s days as governor of Texas and can be accessed by senior administration officials in an instant for use in campaigns to discredit those who speak out against administration policies or acts of the President. The computerized files include intimate personal details on members of Congress; high-ranking local, state and federal officials; prominent media figures and ordinary citizens who may, at one time or another, have spoken out against the President or Administration.
You would think this feckless bunch of neo-fascists would realize that it didn't work back in Nixon's day, and it won't work now.
“How is that you think Karl (Rove) and Scooter (Libby) were able to disseminate so much information on Joe Wilson and his wife,” says one White House aide. “They didn’t have that information by accident. They had it because they have files on those who might hurt them.” ----- Those on the list include former Ambassador Joseph Wilson and his wife, former covert CIA operative Valarie Plame, along with filmmaker and administration critic Michael Moore, Senators like California’s Barbara Boxer, media figures like liberal writer Joe Conason and left-wing bloggers like Markos Moulitsas Zúniga (the DailyKos) and Ana Marie Cox (Wonkette). “If you want to know who’s sleeping with whom, who drinks too much or has a fondness for nose candy, this is the place to find it,” says another White House aide. “Karl (Rove) operates under the rule that if you fuck with us, we’ll fuck you over.”
I'm sure Markos and Ana Marie (two of my favorite bloggers) will be thrilled to know they made the list. Are the members of this administration stupid or just so inept and drunk with power that they think in this day and age of "insant news", not to mention the scope and access of the internet, we will be cowed by their corrupt and bullying practices? I think not! Slowly, but surely, the MSM, and more importantly ordinary citizens are waking up to the fact these guys are bullies, who have policies that do nothing but promote illegal domination of other countries, and pad the the pockets of the moneyed interests of their corporate benefactors. FBI officials want the absentee ballots to be separated from other ballots, so that in the instance of a challenge they can be carefully scrutinized, the station reported. Another Bad Day At The Podium - Or - Helen Get's Her Groove

Well it looks as if Scotty McClellan was given another hard time by the WH Press Corps today. Scotty! Scotty! Answer a friggin' question and you'll have a better day. MSNBC has the video via C&L. From the transcript
Q I'd like you to clear up, once and for all, the ambiguity about torture. Can we get a straight answer? The President says we don't do torture, but Cheney -- MR. McCLELLAN: That's about as straight as it can be. Q Yes, but Cheney has gone to the Senate and asked for an exemption on -- MR. McCLELLAN: No, he has not. Are you claiming he's asked for an exemption on torture? No, that's -- Q He did not ask for that? MR. McCLELLAN: -- that is inaccurate. Q Are you denying everything that came from the Hill, in terms of torture? MR. McCLELLAN: No, you're mischaracterizing things. And I'm not going to get into discussions we have -- Q Can you give me a straight answer for once? MR. McCLELLAN: Let me give it to you, just like the President has. We do not torture. He does not condone torture and he would never -- Q I'm asking about exemptions. MR. McCLELLAN: Let me respond. And he would never authorize the use of torture. We have an obligation to do all that we can to protect the American people. We are engaged -- Q That's not the answer I'm asking for -- MR. McCLELLAN: It is an answer -- because the American people want to know that we are doing all within our power to prevent terrorist attacks from happening. There are people in this world who want to spread a hateful ideology that is based on killing innocent men, women and children. We saw what they can do on September 11th -- Q He didn't ask for an exemption -- MR. McCLELLAN: -- and we are going to -- Q -- answer that one question. I'm asking, is the administration asking for an exemption? MR. McCLELLAN: I am answering your question. The President has made it very clear that we are going to do -- Q You're not answering -- yes or no? MR. McCLELLAN: No, you don't want the American people to hear what the facts are, Helen, and I'm going to tell them the facts. Q -- the American people every day. I'm asking you, yes or no, did we ask for an exemption? MR. McCLELLAN: And let me respond. You've had your opportunity to ask the question. Now I'm going to respond to it. Q If you could answer in a straight way. MR. McCLELLAN: And I'm going to answer it, just like the President -- I just did, and the President has answered it numerous times. Q -- yes or no -- MR. McCLELLAN: Our most important responsibility is to protect the American people. We are engaged in a global war against Islamic radicals who are intent on spreading a hateful ideology, and intent on killing innocent men, women and children. Q Did we ask for an exemption? MR. McCLELLAN: We are going to do what is necessary to protect the American people. Q Is that the answer? MR. McCLELLAN: We are also going to do so in a way that adheres to our laws and to our values. We have made that very clear. The President directed everybody within this government that we do not engage in torture. We will not torture. He made that very clear. Q Are you denying we asked for an exemption? MR. McCLELLAN: Helen, we will continue to work with the Congress on the issue that you brought up. The way you characterize it, that we're asking for exemption from torture, is just flat-out false, because there are laws that are on the books that prohibit the use of torture. And we adhere to those laws. Q We did ask for an exemption; is that right? I mean, be simple -- this is a very simple question. MR. McCLELLAN: I just answered your question. The President answered it last week. Q What are we asking for? Q Would you characterize what we're asking for?
It looks like Helen got her groove on....Go Helen Go!! The entire transcript is available HERE.... there's plenty more to enjoy. It seems to me that if they would stop lying and trying to evade subjects they find disturbing, but are in need of an answer things would go much easier. Then again, the publics' right to know has never been one of this administrations' strong points to put it mildly.

    Congressional Republicans Imploding

I posted here earlier today how Dennis Hastert and Bill Frist were DEMANDING an investigation into the leak about the secret CIA prisons. Well this news is as good as it gets. Via DailyKos:
Too funny. Hastert and Frist make a big show of calling for an investigation into a leak allegedly affecting national security -- the locations of secret "black site" torture prisons. And then -- BOOM!!! Lott just said, Tuesday afternoon, that he thinks it was a GOP Senator who leaked the info to the Washington Post last week. He says the details had been discussed at a GOP Senators-only meeting last week, and that many of those details made it into the WaPo story. Money quote from Lott; "We can not remain silent. We have met the enemy, and it is us." All just reported on CNN. We are, folks, witnessing the full-on implosion of the national Republican Party. And not a second too soon.
Could it be that Senator Lott has sharpened the knife he used on Karl Rove last week saying he should resign and used it on Bill Frist for engineering the loss of the Senate Republican Leadership? Just askin'.

An "Incendiary Device" Not A Chemical Weapon

YAH RIGHT!!! I am sure this will be the explanation given by the military (especially that king of spin Rumsfeld) for the use of White Phosphorous in Iraq. As I posted here earlier you can see the report coming out from the Italian and British media. If you watched the video, you saw one of the soldiers who heard the order for the use say they said "Willy P" would be dropped in 5 minutes. Well here is an interesting article about just what White Phosphorus is. In the article it is also referred to by that name.
Synonyms and related keywords: yellow phosphorus, Willy P, hand grenades, mortar rounds, artillery rounds, smoke bombs, munition igniter, chemical burn, munitions, white phosphorus exposure, white phosphorus burn. ----- Background: White phosphorus has been used commonly by the military as an incendiary agent or as an igniter for munitions. It commonly is found in hand grenades, mortar and artillery rounds, and smoke bombs. Munitions-quality white phosphorus commonly is found in solid form. When exposed to air, it spontaneously ignites and is oxidized rapidly to phosphorus pentoxide. Such heat is produced by this reaction that the element bursts into a yellow flame and produces a dense white smoke. Phosphorus also becomes luminous in the dark, and this property is conveyed to "tracer bullets." This chemical reaction continues until either all the material is consumed or the element is deprived of oxygen.
The article goes on to say most injuries are caused by accidental use. That may very well be the case, but to me the term "accident" is definitely not applicable in this case, since they went to the trouble of warning their personnel first. To bad they didn't do the same for the innocent citizens of Fallujah who suffered the burning agony and consequences of its' use.

Alleged Chemical Weapons Use Picked Up By US Media

So far it is only one media outlet that I have found, but it's a start. The Christian Science Monitor is reporting
An Italian state-run TV documentary says yes, a charge the US calls 'disinformation.' By Tom Regan | csmonitor.com RAI, the all news state-run satellite channel in Italy, aired a documentary Tuesday that accused the United States of using chemical weapons against the civilian population during a November 2004 bombardment of Fallujah. AKI, the Italian news agency, reports that the documentary, entitled "Fallujah: The Hidden Massacre" and aired on the first aniversary of the assault on insurgents in Fallujah, includes interviews with former US soldiers and with residents of Fallujah who say that during the assault on the city the US military used the chemical white phosphorus.
This is a good sign, because it means the information is making its' way (even if slowly), to the American people. However, I will feel much better when I see it on CNN, MSNBC cable outlets and on the front pages and in editorial sections of the top newspapers in the country. I am sure you noticed I didn't include "Faux" News. Well IF they cover it at all you can pretty well be assured it will be in a disparaging way to the foreign press who broke the story rather than demanding an investigation.

Who Leaked CIA Jail Info? - Frist/Hastert Demand

Raw Story reports they have obtained a copy of a letter demanding an investigation into who leaked information to the Washington Post about the CIA using secret prisons in some foreign countries for detaining and questioning al Qaeda suspects. Here is an excerpt:
We request that you immediately initiate a joint investigation into the possible release of classified information to the media alleging that the United States government may be detaining and interrogating terrorists at undisclosed locations abroad. As you know, if accurate, such an egregious disclosure could have long-term and far-reaching damaging and dangerous consequences, and will imperil our efforts to protect the American people and our homeland from terrorist attacks. The purpose of your investigation will be to determine the following: was the information provided to the media classified and accurate?; who leaked this information and under what authority?; and, what is the actual and potential damage done to the national security of the United States and our partners in the Global War on Terror? We will consider other changes to this mandate based on your recommendations. -------- Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Sincerely, William H. Frist, M.D. Majority Leader U.S. Senate J. Dennis Hastert Speaker U.S. House of Representatives
The entire letter is available HERE..... I find it quite telling that these two icons of virtue don't bother wanting to know if the information was legitimate and bringing the Administration to task if it is, only WHO leaked it so they can exact their pound of flesh. I for one am glad the press is finally letting the citizens of the United States know of the atrocities committed in their name.

    Democracy In Iraq Through Chemistry

Are you happy Christian America? Can you justify this being done in your name? My God I can't even wrap my mind around this report!
U.S. Used Chemical Weapons In Iraq Veteran admits: Bodies melted away before us. By RAI The Americans are responsible for a massacre using unconventional weapons, the identical charge for which Saddam Hussein stands accused. An investigation by RAI News 24, the all-news Italian satellite television channel, has pulled the veil from one of the most carefully concealed mysteries from the front in the entire US military campaign.
No damn wonder Bush and the rest of his cabal refused to recognize the International War Crimes Tribunal. If you can stand it, take a look at the video available from ICH News, and also Crooks And Liars. If you call yourself a Christian, how in the world can you support that criminal regime in the White House known as the Bush Administration? I am aghast at the rank hypocrisy of you people. And to think you have "dear leader" stating yesterday "We Don't Torture". What the hell is this if not torture? What were those photos from Abu Gharib? Innocent men, women and children murdered in this hideos way. Imagine if you can, you puting your children to bed, then retiring for the night with your loved one, only to have a white powder dropped on you in your sleep that literally melts away your skin as it burns through to the bone. The use of chemical weapons on the citizens of Iraq was reported on as far back as June by ICH, and other media OUTSIDE the US. Where was the MSM in the US? As usual nowhere to be found.
"Despite persistent rumors of injuries among Iraqis consistent with the use of incendiary weapons such as napalm" the Pentagon insisted that "US forces had not used a new generation of incendiary weapons, codenamed MK77, in Iraq." (UK Independent) The Pentagon lied. Defense Minister, Adam Ingram, admitted that the US had misled the British high-command about the use of napalm, but he would not comment on the extent of the cover up. The use of firebombs puts the US in breach of the 1980 Convention on Certain Chemical Weapons (CCW) and is a violation the Geneva Protocol against the use of white phosphorous, "since its use causes indiscriminate and extreme injuries especially when deployed in an urban area."
Now we have the BBC News reporting the current story.
Italian state TV, Rai, has broadcast a documentary accusing the US military of using white phosphorus bombs against civilians in the Iraqi city of Falluja. Rai says this amounts to the illegal use of chemical arms, though the bombs are considered incendiary devices. Eyewitnesses and ex-US soldiers say the weapon was used in built-up areas in the insurgent-held city. ...... Jeff Englehart, described as a former US soldier who served in Falluja, tells of how he heard orders for white phosphorus to be deployed over military radio - and saw the results. "Burned bodies, burned women, burned children; white phosphorus kills indiscriminately... When it makes contact with skin, then it's absolutely irreversible damage, burning flesh to the bone," he says.
There is a video also available of an interview with Jeff Englehart, HERE. I suspect the same will happen in this last case. The story will only be reported on in Europe by Italian and British media news. I simply have one question for the US media. How can you sit back and be silent when this is being done in the name of a country that used to be known for its' decency?

    Right Wing BS Talking Points

I see King George's minions have received the latest talking points to spread around the internet. You can bet your bippy it will be repeated on every talking head TV program on Sunday also. Definitely on Faux where Kristol is one of the panel. Here is Bill Kristol from The Weekly Standard:
Last Tuesday, Harry Reid took to the floor of the Senate and asserted that the Bush administration had "manufactured and manipulated intelligence in order to sell the war in Iraq and attempted to destroy those who dared to challenge its actions." This is a serious charge; if it were true, it might well be an indictable offense. But it is, in reality, a slander. Shouldn't the president defend his honor? After all, the bipartisan Silberman-Robb commission found no evidence of political manufacture and manipulation of intelligence.
And of course this was quickly picked up by that "beacon of truth" named Time's Blog of the Year:
I don't understand it, and neither does Bill Kristol. The Democrats are mounting the most scurrilous political campaign that has been seen in American politics since the Civil War. The administration can easily win the argument over Iraq, but instead it has abandoned the field to the enemy. Why? Kristol wonders, "[D]o they enjoy being punching bags at the White House?"
Sorry fellas, that bullshit just doesn't seem to match the facts. Here is what the Silberman-Robb Commission REALLY said:
"[W]e were not authorized to investigate how policymakers used the intelligence assessments they received from the Intelligence Community. Accordingly, while we interviewed a host of current and former policymakers during the course of our investigation, the purpose of those interviews was to learn about how the Intelligence Community reached and communicated its judgments about Iraq's weapons programs--not to review how policymakers subsequently used that information."
You want to talk about scurrilous remarks by the Dems, get your facts straight and your own house in order before you open your mouth or hit the keyboard to defend that slimy bunch of criminals in the White House.

Memo To Religious Right - You've Been Had!!!

When are you people of the religious right going to wake up and smell the coffee? That's right I am talking to you - the very people who feel it is YOUR Christian duty to tell the rest of us sinners how to live our lives. What we can read, what we can watch, and even how to conduct ourselves in the privacy of our own bedrooms. Well, no disrespect intended to any of you, but I feel it is MY Christian duty to let you know you would get MORE respect from a $2 prostitute. Obviously your own moral self rightiousness blinds you to facts in the real world. Here is an excerpt from testimony at the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs Oversight Hearing. Via Brad Blog:
In plain terms, Scanlon confessed the source code of recent Republican electoral victories: target religious conservatives, distract everyone else, and then railroad through complex initiatives. "The wackos get their information through the Christian right, Christian radio, mail, the internet and telephone trees," Scanlon wrote in the memo, which was read into the public record at a hearing of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. "Simply put, we want to bring out the wackos to vote against something and make sure the rest of the public lets the whole thing slip past them." The brilliance of this strategy was twofold: Not only would most voters not know about an initiative to protect Coushatta gambling revenues, but religious "wackos" could be tricked into supporting gambling at the Coushatta casino even as they thought they were opposing it.
Isn't that nice dear members of the religious right? Your very own Republican party (remember now, Scanlon was an aide to your icon of religiousity Tom Delay), strums you like a well tuned guitar, and they will keep strumming you right through your much anticipated and longed for "rapture". In case you still don't get it, it is YOU they refer to when they use the term "wackos". Isn't it wonderful to be so appreciated? You can read more at Salon.com - you will have to view a short sponsor ad to read the entire article, but believe me it is a real eye-opener.

Selling The War - Using False Intelligence Reports

Editor and Publisher tips us that:
Ever since the Democrats briefly closed the U.S. Senate from view earlier this week, to protest alleged Republican foot-dragging in probing Bush administration pre-war manipulation of intelligence, the press has been asking: So what new evidence do the Democrats have in this matter? Tomorrow, The New York Times starts to answer the question, with reporter Doug Jehl disclosing the contents of a newly declassified memo apparently passed to him by Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee. It shows that an al-Qaeda official in American custody was identified as a likely fabricator months before the Bush administration began to use his statements as the foundation for its claims that Iraq trained al-Qaeda members to use biological and chemical weapons, according to this Defense Intelligence Agency document from February 2002. It declared that it was probable that the prisoner, Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, "was intentionally misleading the debriefers" in making claims about Iraqi support for al-Qaeda's work with illicit weapons, Jehl reports. "The document provides the earliest and strongest indication of doubts voiced by American intelligence agencies about Mr. Libi's credibility," Jehl writes. "Without mentioning him by name, President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Colin L. Powell, then secretary of state, and other administration officials repeatedly cited Mr. Libi's information as `credible' evidence that Iraq was training Al Qaeda members in the use of explosives and illicit weapons. “Among the first and most prominent assertions was one by Mr. Bush, who said in a major speech in Cincinnati in October 2002 that ‘we've learned that Iraq has trained Al Qaeda members in bomb making and poisons and gases.’”
Is it just me or has The NY Times respectability started to go up a notch since they and Judy seem to have parted ways? And the hits just keep on comin'.

Go Ahead And Torture - Dick Says It's OK

Following on the heels of the Dana Priest article revealing the use of secret prisons in foreign countries, we now get this - also from The Washington Post. Dan Froomkin brings us this tidbit
On NPR yesterday, the former chief of staff to the secretary of state said that he had uncovered a "visible audit trail" tracing the practice of prisoner abuse by U.S. soldiers directly back to Vice President Cheney's office.
That would be Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, USA (RET.), former COS at the State Dept from 2002-05.
"Mr. WILKERSON: I'm privy to the paperwork, both classified and unclassified, that the secretary of State asked me to assemble on how this all got started, what the audit trail was, and when I began to assemble this paperwork, which I no longer have access to, it was clear to me that there was a visible audit trail from the vice president's office through the secretary of Defense down to the commanders in the field that in carefully couched terms -- I'll give you that -- that to a soldier in the field meant two things: We're not getting enough good intelligence and you need to get that evidence, and, oh, by the way, here's some ways you probably can get it. And even some of the ways that they detailed were not in accordance with the spirit of the Geneva Conventions and the law of war.
There is an audio link of the interview available HERE. "Darth Vader" Dick should be thrown out of office on his fat ass. Of course we know that will never happen as long as the Republicans control things in Washington. I guess we can only hope that eventually King George and that lying sack of platitudes Rumsfeld will join him at a "war crimes" tribunal and get their just desserts. Unfortunately, they would be treated a hell of a lot more humanely than those at Guantanamo.

    Now This Is Comforting!

This has to be my pick for the Headline Of The Year Winner! I don't know about you but I feel better already.
In a memo sent to all White House aides on Friday, the counsel's office said it will hold briefings next week on ethics, with a particular focus on the rules governing the handling of classified information. Attendance is mandatory for anyone holding any level of security clearance. ....."The president has made clear his expectation that each member of his Executive Office of the President (EOP) Staff adhere to the spirit as well as the letter of all rules governing ethical conduct for EOP Staff," ....."There will be no exceptions,"
I wonder if this included Dickhead Cheney. Gee maybe he should include a few members of the Republican Ethics Club:
WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 - Kenneth Y. Tomlinson, the head of the federal agency that oversees most government broadcasts to foreign countries, including the Voice of America and Radio Free Europe, is the subject of an inquiry into accusations of misuse of federal money and the use of phantom or unqualified employees, officials involved in that examination said on Friday. Mr. Tomlinson was ousted from the board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting on Thursday after its inspector general concluded an investigation that was critical of him. That examination looked at his efforts as chairman of the corporation to seek more conservative programs on public radio and television.
I guess this song by Bill Jacobs still applies. Enjoy....

Stephen Misses His Buddy - How Sweet

"Scooter Libby is a fine person. And he served the president and the vice president well," White House National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said at a news briefing. "I will miss him as a colleague and as a friend," he added. Sure Stephen he's a real peach. Not to mention a lying sack of crap. BTW..who the hell would call themselves "Scooter"? All we need now is a Fonzie and Mrs. Cunningham.

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm Eulogizes Rosa Parks

Below are the remarks by Michigan Governor Granholm at today's celebration of the life of Rosa Parks
"Rosa Parks... greatness lay in doing what everybody could do, but doesn't. "We will all say today that the greatest tribute that we could pay to our improbable warrior is to continue battling and to do so in a way that honors her life. And I, like you, imagine a day when the war will be won, when a brilliant 8-year-old chess player has the same chances in life, whether she lives in Lavonia, or off of Livernois. "We know that this war will be won when the son of a barber on Grand River receives from each of us the same looks of hope and words of encouragement, as the son of a doctor in Grand Rapids. "We know that the war will be won when the city of Bloomfield Hills and the city of Detroit have the same college graduation rates. And the same low prison incarceration rates, as well. "We know that we will be winning Mrs. Parks' war, our war, when it's yesterday's news that a newly elected governor or senator or president is a woman or a person of color. "We know that we will be winning the war when people in the state of Michigan do not have to vote on whether diversity in our university classrooms is a good thing. "We know we will see signs that we are winning this war when love overwhelms fear and acts of quiet strength become our daily bread. "So good night, Mrs. Parks, from the state of Michigan, to our own gently powerful war hero. Because by your actions, you have given us your final marching orders. We are enlisted in this war. And on behalf of the state of Michigan, ma'am, we are reporting for duty."
These were truly remarkable words from Governor Granholm about a truly remarkable woman. The most relevant part of her remarks IMO were these words. "Rosa Parks... greatness lay in doing what everybody could do, but doesn't." It is truly sad that the present Administration, and unfortunately most members of Congress on both sides of the aisle can't find it in their hearts to follow those words instead of playing political games with the civil rights of all Americans. How ironic that on this day of the celebration of Rosa Parks' life, that heralded the individual rights of Americans you find even Democrats such as Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb) kissing up to the likes of the current SCOTUS nominee Samuel Alito. How pathetic!

    Frist to the world "Whaaaaaaaaa!"

Poor, poor Billy. I guess he can't take it when the tables are turned on him. As reported by Reuters, Billy just can't take it when the usual strong-armed tactics he uses on others are used responsibly by Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid.
"The United States Senate has been hijacked by the Democratic leadership," Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee said. "Never have I been slapped in the face with such an affront to the leadership of this grand institution."
This outburst by Frist only reinforces what many of us already knew. He is a nothing but a bully, constantly kicking sand in the eyes of the true defenders of the right's of the citizens of the U.S. Well Billy guess what? The Democrats have kicked back. Get used to it and get over it!!

    Congratulations Harry!!!!

Finally it looks as though the Democrats seem to have discovered they are the "Opposition Party". Harry Ried's implementation of Rule 21 of the Senate was nothing short of being a stroke of genious on his part. The Democrats have forced the Republican controlled Senate to FINALLY move on to "stage two" of the investigation into the reasons promoted by King George and his neocon group of thugs in the Administration. As posted on Senator Reid's Website, Senator Roberts and the rest of the Republican leadership has stalled and manouvered to delay this inquiry every way but Sunday.
For more than two years, Senate Democrats have pressed Republicans to address the misuse of intelligence. At every turn, Republicans have blocked efforts to investigate how intelligence was used in the run-up to the war in Iraq. Below details the long record established by Democrats to investigate this matter. March 14, 2003 - Senator Rockefeller sent a letter to Director Mueller requesting an investigation into the origin of the Niger documents. May 23, 2003 - Senators Roberts and Rockefeller sent a letter to the CIA and State Department Inspectors General to review issues related to the Niger documents. June 2, 2003 - Senator Rockefeller issued a press release endorsing a statement made of the previous weekend by Senator Warner calling for a joint SSCI/SASC investigation. June 4, 2003 - Senator Rockefeller issued a press release saying he would push for an investigation. Senator Roberts issued a press release saying calls for an investigation are premature. June 10, 2003 - Senator Rockefeller sent a letter to Senator Roberts asking for an investigation. June 11, 2003 - All Committee Democrats signed a letter to Senator Roberts asking for a meeting of the Committee to discuss the question of authorizing an inquiry into the intelligence that formed the basis for going to war. June 11, 2003 - Senator Roberts issued a press release saying this is routine committee oversight, and that criticism of the intelligence community is unwarranted. Senator Rockefeller issued a press release calling the ongoing review inadequate. June 20, 2003 - Senators Roberts and Rockefeller issued a joint press release laying out the scope of the inquiry. August 13, 2003 - Senator Rockefeller sent a letter to Senator Roberts making 14 points about the investigation, asking to expand the inquiry to address the "use of intelligence by policy makers" and asking for several other actions. September 9, 2003 - After press reports quoting Senator Roberts as saying the investigation was almost over, Senator Rockefeller sent a letter to Senator Roberts urging him not to rush to complete the investigation prematurely. October 29, 2003 - Senators Roberts and Rockefeller sent a letter to Director Tenet expressing in strong terms that he should provide documents that have been requested and make individuals available. October 30, 2003 - Senators Roberts and Rockefeller sent letters to Secretaries Rumsfeld and Powell, and National Security Advisor Rice expressing in strong terms that they should provide documents that have been requested and make individuals available. October 31, 2003 - Senator Rockefeller sent a letter to Director Tenet asking for documents related to the interaction between intelligence and policy makers, including the documents from the Vice President's office related to the Powell speech. November 2, 2003 - Senator Roberts made statements during a joint television appearance with Senator Rockefeller claiming that the White house would provide all documents they jointly requested. December 5, 2003 - Senator Rockefeller sent a letter to National Security Advisor Rice asking for her help getting documents and access to individuals. January 22, 2004 - Senator Rockefeller sent a letter to Director Tenet asking for compliance with the Oct. 31 request for documents. February 12, 2004 - Senators Roberts and Rockefeller issued a joint press release announcing the Committee's unanimous approval of the expansion of the Iraq review, to include use of intelligence in the form of public statements, and listing other aspects of what became Phase II. March 23, 2004 - Senator Rockefeller sent yet another letter to Director Tenet asking for compliance with the Oct. 31 request for documents. June 17, 2004 - Senators Roberts and Rockefeller joint press release announcing the unanimous approval of the report. July 16, 2004 - Committee Democrats sent a letter to Bush asking for the one page summary of the NIE prepared for Bush. The Committee staff had been allowed to review it but could not take notes and the Committee was never given a copy. February 3, 2005 - Senator Rockefeller sent a letter to Senator Roberts outlining Committee priorities for the coming year and encouraging completion of Phase II. August 5, 2005 - Senator Rockefeller sent a letter to Senator Roberts expressing concern over the lack of progress on Phase II and calling for a draft to be presented to the Committee at a business meeting in September. September 29, 2005 - All Committee Democrats joined in additional views to the annual Intelligence Authorization Bill criticizing the lack of progress on Phase II.
Now the Democrats appear to have finally grown a pair, hopefully there will be some honest answers forthcoming about the false and manipulated intelligence Bush and Cheney used to involve the US into an unjustified invasion and current occupation of Iraq. Senator Reid's speech before closing the Doors of the Senate was nothing short of brilliant. The entire transcript is available at DailyKos.
