DOD Ordered To Release More Guantanamo Files
U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff ordered the Department of Defense to release more files to the Associated Press in their FOIA request regarding the possible torture and other disciplinary actions taken against detainees held at Guantanamo Bay. The Government had been arguing that the release would violate the detainees' privacy rights."The public interest in disclosing government malfeasance is well-established," the judge wrote in saying that the AP had demonstrated the need. David A. Schulz, who argued the case for the AP, called the judge's decision "a resounding victory for the public's right to know."For the DOD to argue that they are concerned about the detainees' privacy when the Administration is trying to make their use of torture legal is outright ludicrous.
