Senate Votes For Delay On Bolton Nomination
The final vote count of 62-56 on cloture of debate on the Bolton nomination fell short of the 60 votes the Republicans need to go to a final vote. This will put the vote off until after Congress' Memorial Day recess which lasts a week.
This was another victory for the Democrats who were pressing for the delay which they say was becaue the Administration has yet to turn over more documents that they say are necessary to review claims that Bolton misused itelligence reports.Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was quoted as saying: "We're ready to vote on the Bolton nomination if you give us requested information that we're entitled to in assessing whether or not Mr. Bolton should go to the U.N."Let's tell it like it is here. Bush and Frist lost big time this week in the Senate. First they were forced into a compromise on the nuclear option which no matter how the Republicans try to spin it this is a setback regarding future judicial appointments especially as it relates to the Supreme Court. And now today they couldn't garner the votes necessary to end debate and bring the Bolton nomination to the floor for a vote. Of course Frist was calling it a "filibuster" but no Bill it was NOT a filibuster it came down to the fact that you have lost a great deal of your influence with members of your own caucus or you would have easily gained the 60 votes you needed. As Mr. Rogers used to sing "IT'S A WONDERFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD"!!! |
