Dems Appear To Be Folding On Bolton Nomination
I don't know if this is an unpleasant aftermath of the lovey dovey agreement reached last night over the filibuster or what the story is, but Reuters is reporting:Democrats agreed on Tuesday to clear the way for the Senate to vote on the controversial nomination of John Bolton as the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, which was expected to pass mainly on party lines. This would allow the Senate to open debate as early as Wednesday on the nomination. Barbara Boxer, a California Democrat, lifted a procedural hold she had put on the nomination in an unsuccessful effort to wrest more documents on Bolton from the administration. "We're disappointed that we didn't get the information from the administration," said Boxer's spokeswoman Natalie Ravitz. But she said Boxer had agreed with Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, the senior Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, to let the nomination come up for a Senate vote. This totally amazes me especially after the Democrats have been so highly critical of Bolton as a hard-line conservative ideologue and a bully who tried to pressure intelligence officials into making their findings support his political views. Either they know something we don't know, and the votes aren't there in the full Senate, or they have totally caved on their publicly declared stance on the Bolton nomination. |
