Owens Confirmed By Senate
As agreed to in the compromise on judicial filibusters, the Senate as was expected, voted to confirm Priscilla Owen to the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals CBS News reported moments ago. Majority Leader Bill Frist,(R-TN.) of course is not satisfied with this at all as was expressed by his continued and now permanent whining combined with threats. He characterized the Texas Supreme Court justice as "a gentle woman, an accomplished lawyer, and a brilliant jurist" who in his jaded way of looking at things was "unconscionably denied an up-or-down vote" for four years. He then went on to also express regret that a deal brokered by a bipartisan group of 14 senators had sidetracked his attempt to permanently bar the minority from using the filibuster to block judicial nominations saying that the Democratic use of procedural delaying tactics to stop Owen and nine other Bush judicial nominees was "a new and dangerous course" and "a power grab of unprecedented proportions." Now that is really interesting seeing as how it was him and his fellow wingnuts of the far-right who was attempting to change the rules of the Senate in order to take control of another branch of the U.S. government. It is not enough for him that they already control both Houses of Congress, and the Presidency he also wants to control the Judicial branch so these dangerous fascists can turn the country into a theocracy run by the religious right. Democratic leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) on the other hand showed a refreshing voice of reason saying the Senate should put the filibuster dispute behind it and get back to work on other issues. "We should just move on," he said. "It's over with." |
