"She needs a crash course in constitutional law." - Specter On Miers
It looks like King George is growing increasingly concerned over the mounting criticism of Harriet Miers as his nomination to the Supreme Court. He even used his Saturday address to try and shore up support for her for an unprecedented 3rd time since the announcement . The NYT reports that it even looks like Arlen Specter the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee has his doubts. After a blistering week, the White House is scrambling to control a conservative uprising over the nomination of Harriet E. Miers to the Supreme Court, with President Bush pitching his choice directly to the public on Saturday as his Republican allies plotted strategy to shore up support. "Harriet Miers will be the type of judge I said I would nominate: a good conservative judge," Mr. Bush said in his weekly radio address. He added, "When she goes before the Senate, I am confident that all Americans will see what I see every day: Harriet Miers is a woman of intelligence, strength and conviction." It was the third time since he picked Ms. Miers on Monday that the president has come to her defense. His remarks came as the Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee - who will preside over the Miers confirmation hearings and who has called her "intellectually able" - offered a blunt assessment that was yet another sign that the nomination was in trouble on Capitol Hill. "She needs more than murder boards," the chairman, Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, said in an interview, referring to the mock question-and-answer sessions most nominees use to prepare for their confirmation hearings. "She needs a crash course in constitutional law."Add to this news that even Robert Bork, himself a failed nominee, has "borked her" and Miers is really in trouble. Other critics have expressed concern about her lack of experience grappling with constitutional reasoning. Robert Bork - whose nomination to the high court was rejected by the Senate in 1987 - called the choice of Miers "a disaster on every level." "It's a little late to develop a constitutional philosophy or begin to work it out when you're on the court already," Bork said Friday on MSNBC's "The Situation with Tucker Carlson." "It's kind of a slap in the face to the conservatives who've been building up a conservative legal movement for the last 20 years."Come on Harriet, withdraw yourself from the appointment. Your friend who you say you admire so much is making a fool of himself (nothing really unusual there I suppose) and you. |
