Religious Hypocrisy Rears Its' Ugly Head In Meirs Nomination
When John Roberts was named as King George's SCOTUS nominee, Senator Durbin (D-IL) was reprimanded for saying that Roberts' religious beliefs were fair game in order to find out if they would influence any decision he made as a Justice. Said John Cornyn (R-Tex.) at the time "We have no religious tests for public office in this country".
Isn't it interesting that with his latest nominee Harriet Meirs, we are inundated by her minister, Dr. James Dobson, and King George himself about how great is her religious faith and how she is to lives to its' ideal?
Such is the way of the hypocritical atmosphere so prevalent in the Republican Party that has been hijacked by the Religious Right. Now we have statements like this by Dobson permeating the airwaves via his appearance on Faux News with Bret Hume, and newspapers"We know people who have known her for 20, 25 years, and they would vouch for her. . . . I know the church that she goes to and I know the people who go to church with her. I know the individual who led her to the Lord."And of course we also have his statement in the New York Times where he claimed to have "confidential" information. "Some of what I know I am not at liberty to talk about."Just what does he know that the members of the Senate or the American public can't be privy too? Are we are now, in this instance being told we SHOULD take into consideration her evangelical Christian faith. Not only is the public not buying George's crap this time, but also his own Christian Coalition and neocon base, as can be seen by remarks from Bill Kristol She did not come to Washington to be a Supreme Court justice," and she could well decide that this is hurting he president, and could continue to hurt the president, and that the best thing to do would be step aside and go back to serving the president and let him make another pick."I guess "religious tests for public office in this country" are only permitted if they SUPPORT your nominee. Sorry George, the hypocrisy you are attempting to ram down the throats of the people doesn't wash this time. |

I haven't much more than skimmed your blog, so forgive me if I'm off base here.... but do you have anything better to do than dwell on, and criticize, the politics of a country that is not your own. It's possible that you disagree with things that many Americans agree with. Not that you aren't entitled to your opinion, but the botton line is you don't have a vote or anything at stake, and therefore do not have much mandate to second guess every minutia of American politics. Ever heard of cultural relativism? Granted Canadian and American culture are very similar, but I think you see my point as it applies to politics. I dunno.... maybe you'd be happier with China and Russia as the lone world superpowers, but I sure wouldn't.
By the way, I'm a republican and do not support Miers. The issue with me isn't so much religion, it's just that her appointment is more a personal favor than an earned status. I don't believe in God, and don't feel our party has been hijacked by the religious right, as you say. Our leading candidates for '08 are McCain and Guilliani. Our current President makes the republicans seem like the "party of God," but there are plenty of governors and prominent senators that prove otherwise.
Thanks for your comment Andrew, and you do have a valid question therefore I will happily answer it.
Yes I do feel I have the right to second guess decisions made in US politics. Particularly for the very reason you state in your comments. I don't want China or Russia to be the only super power in the world. That leaves the US doesn't it? And being the only "super power" - what takes place in your political arena is very much tied to what your global policy is. Therefore it behooves me greatly to be concerned and comment on US politics and its' hypocricy wherever I see it.
Here is another reason I feel this concerns me. If you know your geography at all you will know that one of the biggest industrial centers in the US is less than five minutes away from me in Detroit Michigan. Would you not be concerned and feel justified in commenting on the decisions made in a country where if that industrial center were attacked by terrorists your very own city would also feel the dire consequences?
You say you are a Republican and I applaud you for appearing to be a REAL REPUBLICAN and would urge you to take your party back from the religious and right-wing extremests who have indeed "hijacked" your party. Look who holds the key leadership roles - Delay a crook, now Blunt another member tainted by scandal, Santorum a religious extremest and Dennis Hastert who runs the House with a fascist fist where he not only refuses to allow hearings by the opposition, but as he did today hold a five minute vote open for 40 minutes until he could twist enough Republican arms to change their vote to yes on a bill that was being defeated. This was an energy bill which exloits the tragedies of Hurricane Katrina and Rita to push through failed energy and air policies the Republican leadership in the House wasn't able to get into the Energy Bill passed earlier this year. Do I not share the same air that you do?
I would urge you, instead of worrying about and/or complaining that I have no business commenting on happenings in another country, rise up and take back your Republican Party and rid it of the the members who are tearing it down.
