George Has His Opening - Bye Bye Harriet
Now that it is finally sinking in that Harriet Miers is going to have a rough confirmation hearing and probably not receive a recommendation from his own Republican controlled House Judiciary Committee King George has his opening to withdraw the nomination.
The Washington Times is reporting that the Administration is even drawing up contigency plans to use in order to withdraw Harrient and send up a new nominee. The White House has begun making contingency plans for the withdrawal of Harriet Miers as President Bush's choice to fill a seat on the Supreme Court, conservative sources said yesterday. "White House senior staff are starting to ask outside people, saying, 'We're not discussing pulling out her nomination, but if we were to, do you have any advice as to how we should do it?' " a conservative Republican with ties to the White House told The Washington Times yesterday.Of course the White House denies this is taking place. However The Times goes on to report But a conservative political consultant with ties to the White House said that he had received such a query from Sara Taylor, director of the Office of White House Political Affairs. Miss Taylor denied making any such calls. A second Republican, who is the leader of a conservative interest group and has ties to the White House, confirmed that the White House is making calls to a select group of conservative activists who are not employed by the government. My guess is this is how it will all play out. Since Republicans on the Judiciary Committee have joined with the Democrats and demanded documents relating to any work done by Harriet in the White House, which of course George will refuse to do, he will then have a "face-saving" reason claiming the high ground citing the greater principle of "executive privilege" or some such nonsense and withdraw the nomination. BBBye Harriet it's been nice knowing ya. |
