Hastert Criminal Probe Request Is Laughable

The NY Times is reporting that House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-OH) has requested Attorney General Gonzales officially investigate the Foley matter. He even went so far as to ask Gonzales to investigate: ".....any and all individuals who may have been aware of this matter -- be they members of Congress, employees of the House of Representatives or anyone outside the Congress." Are we supposed to believe that an Attorney General who doesn't respect the U.S. Constitution on privacy will seriously investigate Hastert himself? I seriously doubt it. This is either being called for to protect the leadership of the Republican Congress by looking like they are being serious about getting to the bottom of this, or he is throwing his buddies under the bus to cover his own ass. Hastert acknowledged over the weekend that his aides had, in fact, referred the matter to the House clerk and to the congressman who was chairman of the board that oversees the page program. Hastert's office said, however, it had not known the e-mails were anything more than "over-friendly." Sorry, but I don't buy it. I agree with Nancy Pelosi who as I posted here, stated in her letter to the Ethics Committee "Republican leaders have admitted to knowing about Mr. Foley's outrageous behavior for six months to a year, and they chose to cover it up rather than to protect these children." I somehow feel that there is no way that Hastert will be investigated. Bush and Gonzales would do anything to protect their partner in crime.
