Rumor - Rehnquist To Retire Friday
The latest buzz around Washington is that Chief Justice Rehnquist will announce his retirement Friday morning. Capitol Buzz reportsRehnquist Rumors: Senate GOP Predicts Announcement Circa 10AM on Friday Republicans on the Judiciary Committee have let Senate Dems know that they should be prepared for Rehnquist to make a statement sometime between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. tomorrow morning and not to schedule anything during that time.This would be the perfect scenario for King George. He can satisfy (or try to if possible) the Christian Taliban of the right by making Scalia the new Chief Justice and then nominating a somewhat acceptable candidate to satisfy the more moderate wing of his party and most Democrats. My guess is Bush will elevate Scalia, then send some right-wing fruit cake as a nominee to satisfy the far-right, knowing all along that the Democrats will threaten fillibuster. Then as a "compromise" he will send up the person he wanted all along Antonio Gonzales. |
